About the Author
Growing up, I didn’t eat a wide variety of foods. My parents fed me what they thought was healthy and followed the Food Pyramid. A lot of our meals were centered around meat and mac and cheese from the box. We’d also hit up the drive thru a lot!
When I hit puberty I started gaining weight, which led to body image issues. I struggled with these weight and body image issues for years. I’d try any new fad diet to make me “thinner”. From Low-Carb Atkins to NutriSystem to just simple calorie restriction, combined with busting my butt in the gym, I tried it all to lose the weight. But, even at my skinniest, I still thought I was fat or needed to lose more weight. It was never enough. I was never happy.
It wasn’t until my late 20’s I started learning that food had so much more of an effect than just making you fat or skinny. I never knew it could affect my mental health, my hormones, my ADHD, my skin problems and SO much more!
I received my certification in holistic nutrition and learned about plant-based nutrition and the benefits it can have on weight-loss but, more importantly, on our overall health.
The more I learned the more I realized that it wasn't about calories or low-carb. What mattered was eating more nourishing foods and less of the foods filled with chemicals, toxins and animal protein.
It was then that I made the switch to a full plant-based lifestyle. Out with meat and dairy, but also out with highly processed food full of ingredients I can't even pronounce to this day.
After cleaning up my diet and focusing on the foods that would nourish the body, I began to feel better. I felt lighter and had more energy. My skin looked better and I felt happier. The weight loss came but by then it wasn't even on my mind. I had never felt better mentally and physically. It's almost like a cloud lifts off your brain, and others who have gone plant-based will tell you the same. There's so many benefits that come with eating plant-based.
Actually detoxing your body from all the chemicals and crap that's put into food nowadays, shortly after you start, you'll realize how horrible you actually felt before eating this way. It's worth the switch just to see your true potential. Do it for your mental and physical health.
